Altoids Tin -- Rust?

From: SpringChick (springchick@letterbox-mi.com) | Date: 2003-06-07 11:23:12 UTC
In preparation for a trip to NYC later this summer and inspired by
YooperAnn's Urban & Microbox workshop at the G.L Gathering, I am
working on putting together a couple of small-sized letterboxes.

I was looking to use an Altoid's Tin for one of these. I cleaned it
out good with detergent and bleach and am hoping the smell is
completely gone. But I've noticed a bit of rust starting around the
rolled edges. What is the best way to deter the rust? I thought
about rustoleum paint, but seems like that would just flake off where
the top and bottom come in contact with each other.

Clear (or otherwise) nail polish might help protect some of the exposed
edges of the metal, or maybe epoxy spray paint might be worth a try if you
want to cover the entire surface.

A certain amount of rust is probably inevitable, for instance near the
hinge where there's no good way to seal the metal or where friction will
eventually wear away the paint, such as where the lid closes.

Also, Sucrets now come in a plastic case that's about the same size as an
altoid tin. It's not likely watertight, but it's probably no worse than an
Altoids tin.

As Doug mentioned a certain amount of rust is inevitable. For micro boxes several folks on the Left Coast have been using plastic 35 mm film canisters. Gwen found one of dvn2rkr's completely submerged but completely dry on the inside. I have set up one Altoids tin covered with black duct tape with a Velcro side, but that's in hot and fairly dry Kernville. It's still in good shape. We are trying out some plastic screw top pill containers . Don

Deb-

If your tin has rust already I would start with a fresh one and DO NOT was
anything metal in bleach. The bleach corrodes the tin immediately and you
won't be able to stop the rust.
I think a good washing with dishsoap is probably enough. Then try some sort
of clear coating, like clear nail polish, to avoid future rust.
